The Monopol Hotel in Katowice was opened in 1903 and is located at the intersection of Dworcowa and Dyrekcyjna streets. From the very beginning, it delighted with luxury, modern equipment and architecture. It quickly became one of the most popular hotels in Silesia. Many distinguished guests stayed here, such as the pianist Artur Rubinstein, the composer Karol Symanowski or the young French captain Charles de Gaulle, and on October 30, 1936, the tenor Jan Kiepura ate here a wedding dinner.

The renovated Hotel Monopol welcomed guests again in 2003 year and again impresses with its luxury and elegance

    History

The settlement in Katowice was established in the 1865th century, but there are no monuments from that period. The most interesting buildings in Katowice are the historical buildings of the Silesian Theater and the exclusive Monopol Hotel. Katowice received city rights only in XNUMX and it was related to the rapid industrial development of the region.

At the beginning of the 20th century, a new railway station was opened, which perfectly connected the city with the rest of Europe.

At the same time, Arnold Lustig, the owner of the famous Café Central operating near the station, bought the villa standing on the plot at the intersection of Dyrekcyjna and Dworcowa streets belonging to the Ollendorf brothers, in order to set up an exclusive hotel there in 1903 year.

The design of the hotel was made by Ludwik Goldstein and a year later, in 1904, at the hotel exhibition in Bytom, the building won a gold medal and an award funded by the Prince of Pszczyna, Hans Heinrich XI Hochberg. In the then Hotel Monopol there were three restaurants, a hotel bakery and a laundry, and on each floor there was a bathroom, which was a determinant of hotel luxury.

The exclusive Hotel Monopol has quickly become the most representative hotel in Katowice. In the 30 of the XX century it was the most expensive hotel in Katowice, and the hotel's price here cost 5,5 zloty.

Splendor brought the hotel the organization of the wedding reception of the world-famous singer Jan Kiepura and the Hungarian film star Marta Eggerth in the autumn of 1936. Legend has it that the great tenor sang from the balcony for the crowds of devotees gathered in front of the hotel.

Other artists also stayed here, such as the piano virtuoso Artur Rubinstein, Tadeusz Boy-Żeleński and Eugeniusz Bodo. One of the apartments of this luxury hotel is dedicated to the memory of the ancient composer Karol Szymanowski who stayed here. The young French captain Charles de Gaulle, who in the years 1919/21 was an observer of the plebistites deciding on the incorporation of the Silesian lands into Poland after World War I, also visited here.

After World War II, at the end of the 40s, the building of the Monopol Hotel was used as an office building. However, there were still restaurants managed by Orbis, and on the ground floor there were antiques and a travel agency. In the mid-80s, the building was finally closed.

In 2001, the building of the former hotel was bought by the Likus brothers and, in accordance with the principles of the Likus group, restored its splendor and luxury in the inter-war climate.
