The Katowice settlement was founded in the 16th century, but there are no monuments from that period. The most interesting buildings in Katowice include the historic buildings of the Silesian Theater and the exclusive Hotel Monopol. Katowice was granted city rights only in the 1865 year and it was connected with the rapid industrial development of the region.
At the beginning of the 20th century, a new railway station was opened, which perfectly connected the city with the rest of Europe.
At the same time, Arnold Lustig, the owner of the famous Café Central operating near the station, bought the villa standing on the plot at the intersection of Dyrekcyjna and Dworcowa streets belonging to the Ollendorf brothers, in order to set up an exclusive hotel there in 1903 year.
The design of the hotel was done by Ludwik Goldstein and a year later, in 1904, at the hotel exhibition in Bytom, the building won a gold medal and a prize funded by Prince Pszczyna Hans Heinrich XI Hochberg. In the then Hotel Monopol there were three restaurants, a hotel bakery and a laundry room, and on each floor there was a bathroom, which was a determinant of hotel luxury.
The exclusive Hotel Monopol has quickly become the most representative hotel in Katowice. In the 30 of the XX century it was the most expensive hotel in Katowice, and the hotel's price here cost 5,5 zloty.
Splendor brought the hotel the organization of the wedding reception of the world-famous singer Jan Kiepura and the Hungarian film star Marta Eggerth in the autumn of 1936. Legend has it that the great tenor sang from the balcony for the crowds of devotees gathered in front of the hotel.
Other artists also stayed here, such as the virtuoso of the piano Artur Rubinstein, Tadeusz Boy-Żeleński or Eugeniusz Bodo. One of the suites of this luxurious hotel is dedicated to the memory of the late composer Karol Szymanowski. There was also a young French captain Charles de Gaulle, who in the years 1919 / 21 was an observer of the plebistites who decided to include the Silesian lands in Poland after the First World War.
After World War II, at the end of the 40 century, the building of the Monopol Hotel was intended for office purposes. However, the dining establishments managed by Orbis still functioned there, and on the ground floor there was an antiques salon and a travel agency. In the mid-nineteenth century, the building was finally closed.
In 2001, the building of the former hotel was bought by the Likus brothers and, in accordance with the principles of the Likus group, restored its splendor and luxury in the inter-war climate.
