The five-star Hotel Stary is located in the heart of the Old Town, on Szczepańska Street, comparable to Prague's Golden Lane. In the past centuries, world-famous magicians and astrologers used to walk here, because it was in Krakow, at the famous Jagiellonian University, where magic was taught. The most eminent specialists in this field of knowledge, such as Paracelsus, John Dee, Edward Kelley, and perhaps even Dr. Faust himself, would come to town.
Hotel Stary is located in an old 14th-century tenement house. During the renovation, therefore, it was necessary to ensure the preservation of historical elements, and for this purpose, they cooperated with conservators of monuments and art historians.
The building has been rebuilt several times over several hundred years.
During conservation works, it was possible to preserve the old architectural elements that were created during the Gothic, Renaissance, Baroque or Classicist periods.
Part of the Gothic ceilings were reconstructed, and eighteenth-century polychromes and inter-church pillars from the 16th century were unveiled and secured.
During the construction works, pottery was discovered dating back to the time of the city's location, a medieval workshop, as well as seventeenth-century documents authorizing the foreign trade of wine.
The building was rebuilt in 1823 by August Plasqude and it is from this period that today's elevation of Hotel Stary comes from. At the attic, a figure of the Roman god of commerce, profit and merchandise, Mercury, was placed, based on the shield with the initials of the then house owner, Alexander Merket.
Another owner of the tenement house initiated the construction of the first railway line between Krakow and Warsaw, and he introduced steam locomotives from his factory on the tracks.
After the First World War, one of the first restaurants in Krakow called 'Feilguta' was opened here, later called 'Trzy Rybki', which functioned until the 90 of the 20th century.
From this period a forged trellis with the image of three fish has been preserved, which can be seen today at the National Museum in Krakow.
The destroyed tenement house was purchased by Holding Liwa, the owner of an exclusive hotel chain. The renovation was carried out, adapting the building to the standards of luxury hotels, while maintaining the historical value of this place. In June 2006 opened the five-star exclusive Hotel Stary and already in 2007 year this hotel won in the prestigious Prix Villegiature competition in Paris and won the prize in the category "best designed hotel interior in Europe".
