The Order was established in 1190, during the third Crusade to the Holy Land, and was initially active there. It wasn't until 1309 that the Grand Master of the Order Siegfried von Feuchtwangen transferred his office to Malbork and Malbork Teutonic Castle became the heart of one of the most powerful countries at the time.
Castle in Malbork expanded, surrounded by defensive walls and a moat. A well-protected High Castle was built, and the former castle grounds after expansion became spacious Middle Castle, available to knights and arriving guests.
At the beginning of the XNUMXth century, the third part of the stronghold was expanded, i.e. Low Castle (Pre-Castle).
W 1457 Malbork was occupied by the Polish army and then the High Castle ceased to be a monastery and became an economic base for the fortress created here. The crew lived in the Middle Castle, and Przedzamcze performed military functions.
The Swedish wars did not cause major losses, although the fire caused serious damage roofs of the High Castle.
During the war in 1945, the presbytery of the church of the Virgin Mary, the main tower, the eastern wing of the Middle Castle and the buildings of Przedzamcza were damaged.
Malbork Castle after the war was rebuilt, and January 1, 1961. created here Castle Museum.
Malbork Museum Teutonic Castle has over 40 exhibits, including medieval architectural elements, artistic amber products, militaria, numismatic items, ceramics, bookplates, tiles, paintings, furniture, antique metals, sculpture, engravings, art glass, fabrics and stained glass.
